Installing laminate flooring is an easy way to update any room in your home. With a range of styles and colors available, this type of flooring is a great option for creating a fresh and stylish look. And since it’s easy to install, it’s a great project for DIY-ers. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you take on the installation process.

Step 1: Measure Your Space

Before you start any installation process, it’s important to measure your space accurately. You’ll want to measure the length and width of the room, as well as any cutouts you may need to make, such as doorways or closets. Make sure to add an extra 10 cm to the measurements to account for any waste.

Step 2: Prepare the Subfloor

Before you can install the laminate flooring, you’ll need to make sure the subfloor is in good condition. Start by checking for any dips or bumps in the floor, and use a self-leveling compound to even out any uneven surfaces. If you’re installing laminate over concrete, you’ll need to make sure there’s no moisture present. You can do this by testing the moisture levels with a moisture meter.

Step 3: Install the Underlayment

Once you’ve prepared the subfloor, you’re ready to install the underlayment. This is an important step as it provides a cushion for the laminate flooring and helps to reduce noise. Start at one corner of the room and unroll the underlayment, making sure to overlap the edges by at least 8 cm. Use a stapler to secure the underlayment to the subfloor.

Step 4: Install the Laminate

Now it’s time to install the laminate flooring. Start at one corner of the room and lay the first piece of laminate. Make sure to leave an expansion gap of at least 8 cm between the walls and the flooring. To connect the sections together, use the tongue and groove system. Secure the pieces together with a tapping block and a hammer.

Step 5: Cut Out Around Obstructions

If you need to cut out any sections around obstructions, such as doorways or closets, use a jigsaw. Make sure to measure the opening and mark the area to be cut. Cut slowly, making sure to keep the saw blade just above the surface of the flooring.

Step 6: Install the Trim

Once the flooring is installed, you’ll need to add trim around the edges of the room. Start by measuring the perimeter of the room and cutting the trim to size. Secure the trim to the flooring with a hammer and finish nails. Add any additional trim pieces, such as baseboard, door jambs, and other moldings, to complete the look.

Step 7: Enjoy Your New Floor

Congratulations! You’ve successfully installed your new laminate flooring. To keep it looking its best, make sure to vacuum regularly and clean up any spills immediately. With proper care and maintenance, your new floor should last for years to come.
