Installing vinyl plank flooring is a great way to freshen up your home. It is a relatively easy process, but it requires some patience and attention to detail. Whether you are a DIY enthusiast or a professional, here are the 7 steps to install floating vinyl plank flooring.

Step 1: Prepare the Subfloor

Before starting the installation process, make sure the subfloor is ready for the vinyl planks. Begin by inspecting the area for any signs of damage or unevenness. If necessary, use a wood chisel or putty knife to level the subfloor. Make sure to sweep and vacuum the area to remove any dirt or debris.

Step 2: Measure and Cut

Measure the area where you plan to install the vinyl planks and mark the measurements on the plank. Use a utility knife, jigsaw, or circular saw to cut the planks to size. Be sure to wear protective gear while cutting the planks.

Step 3: Dry Fit

Before permanently installing the planks, do a dry fit to make sure the planks fit correctly. This will help you determine if any planks need to be cut to size. Make sure to leave a 1/8-inch gap between the planks and the walls to allow for expansion.

Step 4: Install Underlayment

Underlayment is important for cushioning the vinyl plank flooring and preventing moisture from seeping through. Install a foam underlayment with a vapor barrier on top. Make sure the underlayment is flat and secure it to the subfloor with a staple gun or adhesive.

Step 5: Place the Planks

Start by laying the planks in the farthest corner of the room. Place the planks so that they are facing the same direction and are flush with the walls. Use a rubber mallet to tap the planks into place, making sure there are no gaps between the planks.

Step 6: Secure the Planks

To secure the planks, use a pneumatic stapler, flooring nails, or adhesive. Make sure the staples, nails, or adhesive are evenly spaced. Also, be sure to use a damp cloth to wipe up any excess adhesive.

Step 7: Clean and Inspect

Once all the planks are installed, use a soft broom to sweep away any dirt or debris. Inspect the entire area to make sure everything is secure and there are no gaps between the planks. Lastly, allow the adhesive to dry completely before walking on the vinyl planks.
