Using vinegar to clean hardwood floors is a great way to keep your floors looking shiny and new. While vinegar is a powerful cleaner, it is gentle enough not to damage the wood or cause it to become dull. With the right techniques, you can easily keep your hardwood floors looking great for years to come.

Things You’ll Need

  • White vinegar
  • Hot water
  • Soft cloth
  • Soft broom

Step 1: Vacuum the Floor

The first step in cleaning your hardwood floor with vinegar is to vacuum the floor. Vacuuming helps to remove dirt, dust, and other debris that can damage the wood if not removed. Be sure to vacuum in the direction of the grain and to use the soft-bristled brush attachment for best results.

Step 2: Mop with Vinegar and Water

Once the floor is vacuumed, you can begin to mop with vinegar and water. To make the cleaning solution, mix equal parts of hot water and white vinegar in a bucket. Dip a mop or soft cloth into the solution and wring it out so it is damp, not wet. Mop the floor in the direction of the grain and keep the mop moving so you don’t saturate any area. Wipe up any excess liquid with a dry cloth.

Step 3: Dry the Floor

Once the floor is clean and the vinegar and water solution has been wiped up, it’s time to dry the floor. Use a soft cloth to carefully dry the entire surface of the floor, paying extra attention to the corners and edges. Make sure all excess liquid has been removed, as standing water can damage the wood.

Step 4: Apply a Wood Cleaner

Once the floor is dry, you can apply a wood cleaner. Look for one that is designed for use on hardwood floors and is free of harsh chemicals and abrasives. Apply the cleaner to a soft cloth and rub it into the floor in a circular motion. Let the cleaner sit for a few minutes before wiping it up with a damp cloth.

Step 5: Buff the Floor

Once the cleaner has been wiped up, you can buff the floor with a soft cloth. This will help to bring out the shine of the wood and remove any remaining streaks or residue. Start from the back of the room and work your way toward the door, buffing in the direction of the grain.

Tips

  • Be sure to use a mild cleaner designed for hardwood floors.
  • Avoid using too much water when cleaning, as this can damage the wood.
  • Mop the floor regularly to keep it looking its best.
