Vinyl flooring is a popular choice for many homeowners. It’s durable, easy to clean, and comes in a variety of styles and colors. Laying vinyl flooring is relatively straightforward and can be done by someone with basic DIY skills. In this article, we’ll cover the basics of how to lay vinyl flooring.

Preparing the Subfloor

Before you can lay the vinyl flooring, you’ll need to prepare the subfloor. Make sure it’s clean and free of any dirt, dust, or debris. If there are any cracks or holes, fill them with a concrete patching compound. You’ll also need to make sure the subfloor is level. If it’s not, use a self-leveling compound to level it out.

Measuring and Cutting the Vinyl

Once your subfloor is prepared, you can start measuring and cutting the vinyl flooring. Measure the room and mark out the size and shape of the flooring on the back of the vinyl. Use a straight-edge and a sharp utility knife to cut the vinyl. If you need to make any curved cuts, use a pair of scissors.

Applying the Adhesive

The next step is to apply the adhesive to the subfloor. Use a notched trowel to spread the adhesive evenly. Be sure to cover the entire area, including the edges and corners. Allow the adhesive to dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions before laying the vinyl.

Laying the Vinyl

Once the adhesive is dry, you can start laying the vinyl. Start from one corner of the room and unroll the vinyl towards the other corner. Use a rolling pin or a floor roller to press the vinyl down onto the adhesive. Make sure to press the edges and corners firmly so that the vinyl is firmly adhered to the subfloor.

Trimming the Edges

Once the vinyl is in place, you can trim the edges. Use a utility knife and straight-edge to trim the excess vinyl. Be sure to leave a gap of at least 1/4 inch between the walls and the vinyl to allow for expansion.

Cleaning Up

Finally, once the vinyl is in place, you can clean up the area. Vacuum any excess adhesive or debris and then mop the floor. Allow the floor to dry completely before walking on it.

Laying vinyl flooring is a quick and easy way to update your home. With the right tools and a bit of patience, you can have a beautiful new floor in no time.
